Raw vs. Graded Comics: A First-Time Buyer's Guide

Raw vs. Graded Comics: A First-Time Buyer's Guide

If you're just getting into comic collecting, you've probably seen the terms "raw" and "graded" and wondered what they actually mean. Here's a plain-English breakdown to help you make informed decisions before you buy.

What Is a Raw Comic?

A raw comic is simply an ungraded comic — one that has not been submitted to a third-party grading service. Raw comics are the most common form you'll encounter. They may be bagged and boarded for protection or stored completely loose. "Raw" says nothing about condition: a raw book can be pristine or well-worn.

Readability

Raw comics are easy to read, re-read, and enjoy. You can flip through the pages, check for printing defects, and assess the condition yourself. For readers and casual collectors, raw books offer the most hands-on experience.

Preservation

Proper storage matters a lot for raw comics. Acid-free bags and boards, controlled humidity, and avoiding direct sunlight go a long way toward maintaining condition over time. Without professional encapsulation, raw books remain more vulnerable to environmental damage, handling wear, and oxidation.

Provenance & Authenticity

For raw books, provenance relies on the seller's reputation and any accompanying documentation (receipts, COAs for signed copies, etc.). There is no independent verification of condition or authenticity.

Cost

Raw comics generally cost less upfront than their graded counterparts in equivalent condition, making them ideal for readers and budget-conscious collectors.

What Is a Graded Comic?

A graded comic has been submitted to an independent, third-party grading company, examined by trained graders, assigned a numerical grade (typically on a 0.5–10.0 scale), and then sealed in a tamper-evident hard plastic case often called a "slab."

The Grading Scale

Most grading services use a 10-point scale. Key benchmarks collectors refer to:

  • 9.8 (Near Mint/Mint) — Nearly flawless; the most sought-after grade for modern books.
  • 9.6 (Near Mint+) — Exceptional copy with only minor imperfections.
  • 9.4–9.0 (Near Mint) — High-grade copy with minimal wear.
  • 8.0–7.0 (Very Fine) — Noticeable but minor defects; still a sharp-looking book.
  • 6.0 and below — Increasing wear, creases, or defects; common for older or key issues.

Readability

Slabbed comics cannot be read without cracking the case — which would destroy the grade and the slab. Graded books are display and investment pieces, not reading copies. If you want to read a book, buy a raw copy.

Preservation

The hard plastic case protects the comic from humidity, UV light, handling oils, and physical damage. The sealed environment essentially freezes the book's condition at the time of grading, making slabs the gold standard for long-term preservation.

Provenance & Authenticity

A graded slab includes a label documenting the issue, grade, and any notable attributes (e.g., "Signature Series" for books signed in the presence of the grading company). This independent verification provides confidence in both the book's identity and its condition at the time of grading.

Grading Services

Several established companies offer comic grading. The most widely recognized in the hobby include CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) and CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service). Each has its own process, turnaround tiers, and community reputation. We recommend researching both to understand which is accepted in the marketplaces you plan to buy or sell in.

Grading Cost

Submitting a comic for grading involves a service fee that varies by turnaround speed and declared value. Economy tiers are more affordable but can take months; faster tiers cost significantly more. It only makes financial sense to grade a comic if the expected graded value clearly exceeds the raw value plus submission costs.

Raw vs. Graded: Quick Comparison

Raw Graded (Slabbed)
Readable? Yes No (without cracking the case)
Preservation Depends on your storage High — sealed environment
Authenticity verified? No independent verification Yes — by grading company
Entry cost Lower Higher (includes grading fees)
Resale market Active, especially for keys Active, grade-sensitive pricing
Best for Readers & budget collectors Display & preservation-focused collectors

What About Resale?

Both raw and graded comics have active resale markets. Graded books often command higher prices for the same issue in equivalent condition, partly because the grade removes ambiguity. That said, resale value depends on many factors — issue significance, character, print run, demand, and market timing — and is never guaranteed. Always collect what you enjoy first; treat any potential future value as a bonus, not a certainty.
